Finding Cake Decorating Supplies For Your Business

By Christian Kirschbaum

If you are one of those fortunate people who has a talent for fancy baking and a passion for creating gorgeous works of art through cake decoration, you have probably considered opening your own cake decorating business. Have you given much thought to locating a vendor for your cake decorating supplies? You probably don't realize yet just how many choices you have in suppliers. Luckily, there are quite a few.

This is nice for people in the cake decorating business, because it is always good to have a choice in vendors. When you start looking for a vendor, be sure to talk with several and set up small deliveries from them to get to know them. In this way, you will have relationships established with several suppliers, and you will never be stuck without supplies.

One advantage of establishing relationships with several vendors is the opportunity to check the quality of their supplies. When you are first starting out and money is tight, you may think that it is a good idea to just use the least expensive vendor. However, this is not always a good idea. If you start your business using inferior ingredients, you will be starting out offering inferior products. This will hurt your business. So just make several small orders from a variety of vendors and inspect their products carefully before using them to create your masterpieces.

This process will help you know which vendors to give your business to next time. Additionally, it is simply a good practice to establish relationships with several vendors. In this way, you will always be sure to have a supplier no matter what happens in their business or yours.

After you have sorted through the vendors and found the ones that deliver the best goods in the most reliable manner, you can begin sorting them by price. Bear in mind that some companies may require you to order a minimum amount, and this may be prohibitive as you launch your business. You will want to be careful not to tie up too much capital in inventory.

You may want to put those vendors on the back burner until you get well under way. Just stay with vendors who will allow you to make small orders and order only as much as you will need. By using several vendors for small orders, you will be able to further compare them in terms of customer service and speed of delivery. Once your business is established and you are familiar with a few vendors, you can begin making bulk orders.

One strategy for choosing a vendor that you may want to employ is to order samples from several companies. This is easily accomplished online. When you do this, you will have a good overview of the types of cake decorating supplies that are available to you. You will also have established relationships with several vendors and you will have a good idea of what kind of service they provide. Armed with this knowledge, you will be able to make a well-educated choice regarding vendors for your business.
